Autocephalous Archbishop Holds Memorial Service For WWII Soldiers

Marking the 57th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s capitulation in World War Two, Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of Kharkiv and Poltava of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) served a memorial service on 8 May 2002 at the cemetery in the village of Sokolove (Kharkiv region, eastern Ukraine). Soldiers of the Polish, Soviet and Ukrainian liberation armies, as well as of the Czechoslovak corps, are buried there.
Archbishop Isichenko was accompanied by Fr. Vitalii Zubyk and lay people of the Kharkiv and Poltava eparchy of the UAOC. Ivan Nesterenko, head of the Sokolove village council, representatives of the Kharkiv city administration and of the Polish consulate in Kharkiv, along with activists of Kharkiv political parties and public organizations, were present at the service.
