The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the person of its head, Patriarch Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) expressed its regret that “the authorities pray for Ukraine without representatives of a great part of Ukrainians.” That is how the head of UGCC commented to UNIAN on the fact that UGCC did not take part in the prayer for the Ukrainian state and Ukrainian nation on occasion of the end of the year.

The prayer was conducted on 23 December by Metropolitan Ahafangel of Odesa and Izmail of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate in the presence of Ukraine’s President and other leaders of the state.

We are glad that the authorities pray, ask Lord God for help. However, we are very sorry that the representatives of the authorities did not want to pray with representatives of all the Churches who are included in the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. It is true that we cannot celebrate a liturgy with our Orthodox brethren but we can serve a thanksgiving prayer service but…” noted Patriarch Sviatoslav.
