Greek Catholics To Remember Famine’s 70th Anniversary

19.11.2002, 10:35

A gathering under the slogan “May There Always Be Enough Bread In Your House” will be held in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Cathedral of St. George in western Ukrainian Lviv on 23 November 2002. It will be dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Soviet-imposed famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933.

Fr. Roman Kravchyk of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), administrator of the cathedral, initiated the event. According to him, it is necessary “to remind everyone, especially youth, about those horrible times that our predecessors endured during the famine… This event should teach us to value bread and also to better understand the hungry people among us.” The event will start with a Divine Liturgy and memorial service (panakhyda) for the victims of the famine. Those present will then have the opportunity to make a donation. The funds raised during the event will be used to buy food and other products for the needy.
