Head Of Polish Orthodox Church Visits Kharkiv

A delegation from the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, headed by Metropolitan Sawa (Michal Hrycuniak) of Warsaw, head of the Polish Orthodox Church, visited the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv from 22 to 24 October 2002.

On 23 October, the Polish delegation, which in addition to clergy also consisted of scholars and academy instructors, and priests of the Kharkiv eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) met with the representatives of the Kharkiv regional and local administrations. On the same day, Metropolitan Sawa visited the National University in Kharkiv and the Monastery of the Protection of the Mother of God. During his stay in Kharkiv, Metropolitan Sawa met with Bishop Nykodym (Rusnak) of Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv (UOC-MP). At this meeting, a doctoral degree in theology, “honoris causa,” was conferred on Bishop Nykodym. The governor of the Kharkiv region, the mayor of Kharkiv, rectors of higher educational institutions that cooperate with the Kharkiv eparchy of the UOC-MP, and the consuls of Poland and Russia participated in the ceremony.
