Roman Catholics are preparing to mark the 25th anniversary of the restoration of their church structures in Ukraine. A quarter of century ago, the Roman Catholic Church suffered cruel persecution from the Communist regime. It was able to recover its full activity after Ukraine obtained  independence.

On the occasion of the Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops of Ukraine addressed a pastoral word to the faithful. The hierarchs of the RCC ask clergy and laity to come to church on Sunday, January 17and lift up their gratitude to God and the Virgin Mary.

"At the end of each Holy Mass let the thanksgiving hymn Te Deum be raised in out churches,” they appeal.

In his message, the authors remind that in 1946 the authorities expelled from the city the last Metropolitan - Archbishop Yevheniush Baziak and many people took it as a complete defeat of the Church.

“The memories of the times when the Church was persecuted by the communist authorities will be always alive in our families. Thanks to the clergy, consecrated persons and lay people who courageously kept fidelity to Christ and passed the tradition - often secretly - we can say that today we have faith,” said the bishops.

“On January 16, 1991, now a saint, Pope John Paul II renewed archdiocese of Lviv, Zhytomyr and Kamyanets-Podilsk dioceses. Five pastors were appointed for the restored dioceses. We thank God for them, for all the clergymen, for all those who contributed to survival of our Church under persecution! Let this experience strengthen our faith today, as the prophet Haggai said: "Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month " (Haggai 2:18),” goes the pastoral message published by the Catholic Media Center.
