President Meets With Pope

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma met with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican library on 28 November 2002. According to Olena Hromnytska, the president’s press secretary, during the ten-minute meeting the Pope wished Ukraine success on its way to European integration. Pope John Paul II also noted that he recalls his visit last year to Ukraine, in particular to the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Lviv, with great delight.

After a short talk, the Pope presented Kuchma with a collection of medallions on which the Roman pontiffs are depicted. The president presented Pope John Paul II with a depiction of St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv, in memory of his visit to Ukraine in 2001. In addition, President Kuchma also introduced the members of the Ukrainian official delegation and thanked the Pope for the meeting.
