Director of the Department for Religious Affairs and Nationalities of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine Andrei Yurash is confident that Zelensky will give Fanar only positive signals – namely, that Ukraine will continue this multi-level communication with the Ecumenical Patriarch. He told "Obozrevatel"about it.

"The current communication is not only a continuation of Poroshenko's vision, as someone tries to present it. System relations between Kyiv and the Phanar were established during Kuchma's tenure, when they first realized the futility of orientation to Moscow. During Yushchenko's tenure they reached the level of the highest communication – then the official visit took place. Yanukovych fell out of this context, and the apogee, of course, were the times of Poroshenko's presidency, when Ukraine received the Tomos. Therefore, it is quite logical that the 20-year experience of communication between the Ecumenical Patriarch and Ukraine should be extended. Therefore, since Zelensky's election, there have been informal messages about the desire for such communication," Yurash said.

The religious scholar believes that Patriarch Bartholomew uses the meeting to remove the negative moments that arose through the activities of enemies and will present to the new government the first-hand explanation and his vision of how the process of development of the Ukrainian Local Church and the role of the Phanar therein.

He also reminded that a permanent mission of the Ecumenical Patriarch (Stavropegia) operates in Ukraine. "We are talking about the full restoration of St. Andrew's Church and the completion of restoration work there. At the end of this year, it is planned to start systematic daily services in this Church. The office, which will be located downstairs in the so-called stylobate of St. Andrew's Church, should start working as well. Therefore, both sides need communication to bring the relationship to the working level", - said Yurash.
