Ukrainian Muslims Begin Ramadan
According to the teachings of Islam, the prophet Mohammed received the revelation of the Koran in Ramadan. In commemoration of this, all Muslims observe a strict fast from dawn until sunset during the whole month. During the fast, Muslims also have an obligation to visit their parents, the sick, and orphans and help the poor. Every year, the mufti calculates the sum for the donation on the basis of market prices on wheat and other products and groceries. This year, every member of a Muslim family, regardless of their age, should donate 1.5 hryvnias (about 25 cents) to the poor. The month of Ramadan will continue 29 days this year and culminate in the holiday Bairam on 5 December. Source: www.i-news.org
