At the initiative of Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea (Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate), a prison cell was refurnished into a prayer room in one of the prisons in southern Ukrainian Simferopol. This news was reported by the news agency Forum on 13 May 2002.
The new prayer room is located in a prison for juvenile delinquents whose cases are currently under investigation. The decision to turn the former special punishment cell into a prayer room was made after it had remained unoccupied for a long period of time because some regulations in the jail were relaxed. After consecration, the room was named in honor of St. Anastasia, a martyr who is believed to protect prisoners.
