Bishop Basil Medvit of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) sent a letter in the name of the entire UGCC to the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Carlos Pascual in Kyiv on 13 September 2001. A translation of the text follows.
Kyiv 13 September 2001 To: Mr. Carlos Pascual Ambassador of the United States of America to Ukraine Dear Mr. Ambassador: In the name of His Beatitude Lubomyr Cardinal Husar and the bishops, members of the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, priests and faithful, I want to express our deepest sympathies and fraternal prayerful union with the American people in this time of suffering and trials. All people of good will who cherish in their hearts freedom and democracy are aware that this shameful terrorist act against the society of the United States of America is also a blow against freedom and democracy in the whole world. For your government is a symbol of freedom and democracy. We want to assure you, Mr. Ambassador, and all citizens of the United States of America, that the whole Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is suffering together with you. We are praying for the souls of those who perished during this tragedy and we ask God for the grace of endurance and strength for the families and friends of those who innocently have passed into eternity. The whole Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine on Sunday 16 September of this year in a special way will pray for the intention of those who died and for their families. May Almighty God bless America and the American people. The Lord’s blessing on you all! Basil Medvit Exarch of Kyiv and Vyshhorod, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church
