178 crimes motivated by racial, national or religious intolerance registered in Ukraine in 2020 – UCP

In Ukraine, 178 crimes committed on the grounds of racial, national or religious intolerance were committed last year, and 20 crimes were registered in 2021.

This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office in response to a request from Radio Svoboda.

The Prosecutor General's Office added that in 2020, six criminal proceedings were sent to the court on the fact of crimes committed on the grounds of racial, national or religious intolerance. In January-February 2021, two such proceedings were submitted to the court for consideration.

Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, "Violation of equal rights of citizens depending on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability and other grounds" provides for a minimum penalty – a fine of two hundred to five hundred non – taxable minimum incomes of citizens or restriction of liberty for up to five years, the maximum penalty-eight years of imprisonment.
