Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov will participate in the remembrance ceremony and the laying of flowers at Askold’s Grave in Kyiv to mark the Day of Remembrance of the Heroes of Kruty.
The heroic deaths of the student fighters at Kruty became a symbol of patriotism and sacrifice in the struggle for independent Ukraine. In March 1918, after the signing by the Bolsheviks of the Brest Peace Treaty and return of the Government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic to Kyiv by a decision of the Central Council, the bodies of 28 of the perished students were re-buried in Kyiv where a memorial events were held.
