Attempt Made to Seize Monument of Kyivan Rus in Kyiv

On April 26, in the Lviv Square in Kyiv, unknown persons made an attempt to seize the site of the reconstruction of a Kyivan Rus monument, the Church of the Presentation of the Lord (Stritenska).

By a decree of President Yushchenko, UAH 2 million was allocated to start archeological excavation at the site.

According to a deputy of the Kyiv City Council, Oleksandr Bryhinets, the unknown persons broke the fence and began to fill up the foundation pit.

“Unknown people broke the lock on the fence protecting the excavation site and broke two sections of the fence. After that, they tried to fill up the foundation pit with soil brought by two trucks beforehand,” the senior priest of the chapel, Fr. Serhii Tkachuk, reported to kp.ua.

According to the priests of the church, the tractor driver even deliberately ran into one of the protesting lay brothers but he managed to jump away.

Police officers arrived at the site, drew up a report and left.
