The city government is working on creation of Memorial of the Holocaust victims “Babi Yar” in Kyiv, which will become a museum of memory in the place of a terrible crime and tragedy. This was stated by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, according to the press service of the KSCA.

“About 6 million Jews fell victims of the Holocaust, of which about 2.5 million were in the former Soviet Union. One of the terrible places where people massively destroyed, was Babi Yar in Kyiv. And our task is to keep the memory of this tragedy to do everything so that such a crime against humanity will never be repeated!” Vitaly Klitschko has said.

Holocaust Memorials are in many world cities - Vienna, Berlin, Warsaw, New York and Jerusalem. However, there is still no memorial at Babi Yar in Kyiv, in the place where it was killed almost 100,000 people.

“The memorial should exist! In late September, we signed a declaration of intent to build the Memorial of the Holocaust victims “Babi Yar.” Its implementation will involve well-known Ukrainian and international philanthropists, historians, educators, leaders of civil society and international partners. The work has already begun. We will do everything  to erect the memorial in Kyiv that will become a symbol not only perpetuate the memory of those who died, but those who rescued people from death – the Righteous among the Nations,” said the mayor of Kyiv.
