At the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on 22 October the draft Law of Ukraine “On a moratorium on the construction of facilities in the protected (buffer) zones and areas adjacent to the World Heritage sites, the historical parts of towns included in the List of historical settlements of Ukraine” was approved, as reported by Rrostir.museum.
The law was designed to prevent the distortion of the traditional character of the environment, to prevent damage, destruction and demolition of cultural heritage as a result of construction work in security (buffer) zones and areas adjacent to World Heritage sites and of the historical parts of towns included in the ‘List of Historical settlements of Ukraine’, to accelerate the development of research and design documentation to determine the limits and regimes of historical areas of settlements and security (buffer) zones of the World Heritage. For this end, it was proposed to adopt a moratorium on the construction of facilities in the protected (buffer) zones and adjacent areas of the World Heritage sites and zones of interest.
The draft law will ensure preservation of the World Heritage included in the List of Historical Settlements of Ukraine.
