The Winnipeg chapter of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada is putting on a fundraising breakfast to help vulnerable girls in Lviv, Ukraine, who could fall prey to human traffickers. The Home of Hope is being run by the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, CBC Manitoba informs.

The girls are orphans. Once they turn 16 years old, they no longer have any support. Vicki Adams says that makes them an easy target for predators.

"The traffickers are ready for them. They know this. And so they are very vulnerable because they have nowhere to go except on the street, and then they get picked up by the predators and sold," she said.

Adams is the chair of Charities and Social Development for the UCWL.

A derelict house in Lviv was purchased, gutted and remodelled. Last year, the Winnipeg chapter of the UCWL raised $24,000 for bedrooms and bedroom furniture.

There are 20 girls living in the house now, with two more expected by the end of the month. Adams said those two are victims of Russian terrorism — their houses were burned.
