Pope John Paul II visited the city of Krakow in southern Poland from 16 to 20 August 2002. Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), gave his commentary on the pontiff’s visit.

According to the cardinal, the Pope’s visit to Krakow, the city where he spent his youth and later served as a priest, bishop and cardinal, was laden with great personal importance. Cardinal Husar noted that, during his visit to Poland, Pope John Paul II raised the extremely important issue of God’s mercy to a church-wide level. The cardinal believes it to be an impetus for further theological contemplation of this reality at the present time. “We will need to ponder this issue seriously and develop it, since for us it is very important,” said Cardinal Husar.
