During a meeting with representatives of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church announced that 300 parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church have been established on the African continent.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on Telegram.
"The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, spoke at a meeting with representatives of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa about the 'great potential of Orthodoxy in Africa.' He emphasized that the exarchate operates in 36 countries across the continent, with over 270 clergy members and more than 300 parishes," the message reads.
While the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church are officially framed as providing "spiritual support" and "assistance in uniting the peoples of Africa," in reality, the Church serves as a tool for the Kremlin to promote its political and ideological influence. Church leaders often discuss themes of anti-colonialism, trying to position Russia as "Africa's friend." However, Moscow's true objectives are more neocolonial, focusing on accessing resources and strengthening its military presence.
The Center for Countering Disinformation noted that after the onset of the full-scale war against Ukraine, Russia significantly increased its "religious presence" in Africa. In just the past three years, the Russian Orthodox Church has opened parishes in at least 30 countries.
Moreover, the Center pointed out that the ROC's activities in Africa are not centered on spirituality but rather on geopolitical influence. The aim is clear: to bolster Russia's position on the continent and increase support for Moscow's actions on the international stage.
