Country’s main Christmas tree with a white dove appeared on St Sophia Square

A 24-foot Christmas tree brought from the Carpathian Mountains was installed in St Sophia Square today.

This was said in the message ofthe art project Ukraine Folk press-service, who organized New Year celebrations, reports Espreso.TV.

To fix the tree weighing 15 tons a bulk structure of concrete and metal, weighing 60 tonswas constructed. The installation lasted more than 8 hours.

"I think we can please the residents, who are tired of artificial trees and plastic cones that cost millions, with a living tree. As long as it is tied up, as it could be transported only this way. Over 3,000 Christmas toys and 14 km  ofgarlands, consisting of 100 thousand LEDs have been already prepared,” says Igor Dobrutsky, the organizer of the New Year celebrations and the founder of artistic project Folk Ukraine.

According to Dobrutsky, the Christmas tree will be decorated with white doves as a symbol of peace and good news and toys with Ukrainian ornament and toys in the form of houses, symbolizing  cosiness and warmth.

In addition to the main tree, in the Sofia square and the territory of Saint Sophia Cathedral on December 19 there will be a few dozen trees. 10 will represent thedistricts of Kyiv, and another 24 –Ukrainian regions. After the holidays, the organizers plan to saw the trunk of the tree into several hundred cross sections and sell at auction. The proceeds from all items will be given to orphanages.
