On October 2, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the XVI annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club, said that the United States " is putting pressure on the Orthodox Churches in the Middle East and North Africa, demanding that they recognize the new church entity in Ukraine.
