Active members of the Ukrainian FEMEN movement cut down with a petrol-powered saw Christian memorial cross over Independence Square [Maidan] in Kyiv, reported ТSN.
In that way the members of Femen expressed their support for the members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot who will be sentenced this Friday for the scandalous punk “prayer service” in a church.
“On the day of pronouncing of the sentence, the women’s movement FEMEN is expressing its support and respect for the Russian colleagues of the Pussy Riot band. To show solidarity with the victims of the Kremlin priests’ regime, the Femen members knocked down the memorial cross…” reads the movement’s press release.
The activists stated that by that act they “are calling all the healthy forces of the society to mercilessly cut out from the brain the rotten religious prejudices which serve a support for the dictatorship and obstruct the development of democracy and freedom of women.”
The memorial cross was erected on the hill near the Zhovtnevyi Palace in Kyiv where the Communist NKVD was stationed and executions were carried out before WWII.
