Government To Discuss Restitution Of Religious Property

23.09.2002, 14:52
On 25 September 2002, the Ukrainian government will consider a plan of urgent measures for combating the negative consequences of the totalitarian policies of the former Soviet Union regarding religion and the restoration of the violated rights of churches and religious organizations. Volodymyr Semynozhenko, vice-premier of the Ukrainian government, announced this a meeting of the inter-departmental commission.

According to the plan, the government will resolve problems of the return of religious property, literature, and buildings which were illegitimately confiscated during Soviet times to churches and religious organizations of Ukraine. In addition, the plan will propose a legislative bill on the allotment of land to religious organizations, the creation of an effective mechanism to prevent interreligious conflicts, the restoration of religious monuments, and the organization of educational activities by the state. According to Semynozhenko, the implementation of this plan “is called not only to ensure that the negative consequences of totalitarian policies of the former Soviet Union regarding religion are overcome, but also is meant to facilitate the consolidation of interreligious understanding in Ukraine.” Source: press service of the vice-premier of the Ukrainian government
