Group For Creation Of National Church Established In Ukrainian Parliament

Two hundred thirty two national deputies of Ukraine joined the group “A Ukrainian National Church For Ukraine” on 20 November 2002. They declared that the creation of one national church is “the realization of a great spiritual and social need of the Ukrainian nation.”
According to Deputy Hryhorovych of the political bloc “Our Ukraine,” who announced the establishment of the group, it testifies to the creation of “the right majority in the parliament.” In accord with the Constitution of Ukraine, there are 450 national deputies in the Ukrainian Parliament. Today, out of 24,000 registered religious organizations in Ukraine, 12.5 thousand are Orthodox. The Moscow Orthodox have 9000, Kyivan Orthodox 3000, and the Autocephalous Orthodox 1000 religious organizations.
