Hegumen of Holy Dormition Lavra of the UGCC appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Prešov

His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed the Venerable Father Jonah Maxym, the hegumen of the Holy Dormition Uniate Lavra, as the archbishop and metropolitan of Prešov, Slovakia.

This was reported by the UGCC Information Department, citing the press service of the Holy See.

Hieromonk Jonah was born on November 21, 1974, in the city of Levoca, Slovakia. He received his initial theological education at the Prešov Seminary. On July 11, 1998, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Jan Hirka. In the fall of 2004, he joined the Holy Dormition Uniate Lavra. In 2018, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the subject of studite monasticism at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. He served as the abbot of the Saint Michael Monastery in Lviv.

On June 18, 2020, the Lavra's brethren elected him as hegumen for a term of five years. Patriarch Sviatoslav confirmed the election with his decree on June 19, 2020.
