Metropolitan Borys Gudziak of Philadelphia addressed the Congress and the press and expressed his gratitude for the provided assistance. He was joined by Yaroslav Bazylevych and Maksym Kulyk, who lost their families in the Russian missile attack.
The event was held as part of the Ukrainian Week in Washington, Espreso reports.
“… I reserve a special thanks for Yaroslav and Maksym, who just spoke. I think it is difficult for us to imagine what it is like to live their loss and to stand before people and vulnerably share the pain of their hearts. I am proud of the good will of so many Americans that stand with Ukraine,” said Bishop Gudziak.
He added that there are about 75 million Catholics in the United States and 270 active Catholic bishops, and every Catholic bishop supports Ukraine.
“It is rare to see a standing ovation at a bishops' conference. Yet, over the past few years, the topic of Ukraine has made the Catholic bishops of this country stand up. All six active cardinals in the United States support our Metropolitan's foundation, Healing the Wounds of War.”
Borys Gudziak appealed to those Catholics who are still hesitant to support Ukrainians, saying that doing so is in line with the Gospel.
“It is impossible to be with Jesus and not support Ukraine. It is impossible to be with Jesus and not be with the poor. It is impossible to be with Jesus and not show mercy to the internally displaced persons who have lost everything and have nowhere to return to. It is impossible to be with Jesus and not support those who, according to Him, have the greatest love. For there is no greater love than that of a man who gives his life for his friends,” said Metropolitan Borys Gudziak.
