The International Day "Cities for Life" is celebrated on November 30 after the first abolition of death penalty in a European state. On November 30, 1786, the decree of Peter Leopold Joseph of Habsburg was abolished death penalty in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

On this day, the cities participating in the initiative illuminate a famous monument or a famous building. The action initiated by the Community of Sant'Egidio and has the support of major international human rights organizations, members of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
