Jews in the central Golden Rose Synagogue in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk conduct services on occasion of the day of grievance and fast of 9 Av.
On that day, the Jews in the synagogue observe the rules of mourning, they do not greet each other, sit on the floor or low benches and do not even study the Torah as it is a source of joy. They may study only abstracts associated with sad events, for instance, the prayers of 9 Av begin with reading of the Jeremiah’s scroll.
The fasting will last for more than 24 hours but some mourning restrictions will be effective for a longer time.
