According to the result of the voting in the parliament on November 15, the draft resolution on marking remembrance days and jubilees in 2012 was rejected.
“The proposal is yet another indication that a different psychology and ideology of celebration is being imposed. When triumphant victors are made of the figures who were traitors of the Ukrainian nation, such as Mazepa or Slipyj, who consecrated the Nazi crimes in the territory of Ukraine as the head of the Greek Catholic Church. This points to the so-called responsibility of those who do not see today the real history of the Ukrainian nation and what was achieved at the Soviet time,” the chief Communist commented on the draft Resolution 8769.
The bill was submitted by Ukrainian deputies V. Karpuk and V. Yavorivskyi and, according to the Committee on Culture and Spirituality, defines the list of the most important events in the social-political life of Ukraine and jubilees of outstanding persons to be marked at the state level in 2012 and provides an appropriate legal basis for the organization of the celebrations. The bill was previously considered and recommended by the Supreme Council’s Committee on Culture and Spirituality.
The days proposed include the 120th anniversary of birth of the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a political, religious and scholarly figure, Josyf Slipyj (Kobernytskyi) (1892-1984) on February 17, 2012, and the 325th anniversary of the election of Ivan Mazepa Hetman of Ukraine on July 25, 2012. The draft resolution contains also other important days and jubilees connected with religious-social life of Ukraine, such as 150th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of St. Volodymyr’s Cathedral and 80th anniversary of the genocidal Holodomor.
