Efforts to create the Ukrainian Local Orthodox Church and the processes associated with the Tomos are a consequence of the “drifting away from the vast empire the Soviet Union used to be.

Liudmyla Fylypovych, Doctor of Philosophy, Head of the Department of Philosophy and History of Religion of Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, said this on October 7, 2018, in the program Political MarinaD hosted by Marina Daniluk-Yarmolayeva on Espreso TV channel.

“It was absolutely natural to expect that after the political collapse, when the state borders were formalized, there would be a breakup, divorce in the spiritual domain, in particular, in religious and church matters,” she stressed.

According to Fylypovych, the same trends are evolving in all religious communities in Ukraine.

"In fact, all religious organizations that were in a certain subordination or in a “fraternal union”, as they said, with Moscow, are mulling today: should they align with the East and belong to the Eurasian unions? Similar consideration are made by Protestants, Jews and Muslims,” she explained.

Thus, as the expert notes, “the independent Ukrainian spiritual and religious tradition” is being formed.

"And this, I reiterate, concerns not only Orthodox Christians.”
