The initiators and organizers of the project were the Synodal Department for Social Service and Charity of the UOC-KP, National Military History Museum of Ukraine, electronic resource “Memorial Book of the Fallen for Ukraine” Foundation and “The Wall of people’s memory”with the blessing of Patriarch Filaret.
A memorial service for those killed in Donbas and the rite of blessing of the "Memorial Wall" was performed by Patriarch Filaret. “We are here today to immortalize the memory of the soldierswho fell in eastern Ukraine, who gave their lives for us,” said Patriarch Filaret. “And we believe that God will give them His Eternal Kingdom of Heaven. Nevertheless, our duty is not only to remember, butto pray for them. We open today a memorial wall on Michael's monastery in order that anyperson passing along would recall that these people have given their lives for our freedom.”
During the opening ceremony the project organizers noted that only the first three frames were opened, containing the data on 800 heroes who died in Donbas until August 23, 2014 inclusive. The opening of the rest of the wall is scheduled for August 24, 2015, as about 100 heroes who died in Ilovaisk deathtrap, remain buried in unmarked graves in Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia.
