The Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), addressed Ukraine’s President with a call to veto the Law on the unified state demographic register.

The head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), addressed Ukraine’s president with a call to veto the Law “On the unified state demographic register and documents confirming the Ukrainian citizenship, identifying the person or their social status,” which was passed by the Supreme Council on October 2, the website of UOC-MP reported.

“Dear Viktor Fedorovych [editor: patronymic of President Yanukovych]! I am addressing You on behalf of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with the request to veto the Law 'On the unified state demographic register and documents confirming the Ukrainian citizenship, identifying the person or their social status' (#10492) as this law poses a threat of restricting basic human rights. In my opinion, the question of advisability of the creation of the unified demographic register in Ukraine requires further study. It is known that many foreign countries refused to introduce similar registers,” Metropolitan Volodymyr said in his address.
