Muslims in Sumy Participate in Charitable Action of UOC-MP

Foreign students of State University of the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy gathered funds for children suffering from cancer at the central square of the city.

Foreign students of State University of the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy gathered funds for children suffering from cancer at the central square of the city. In this way, they contributed to the action “Light acts for the Light Day” which is initiated by the Sumy Regional State TV ad Radio Company and the Sumy Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate and which is held from 27 February to 17 April, 2012. According to the Head of the Sumy City Public Youth Association “Social Organization of Students,” Yulia Tarasenko, on 12 March, their public organization held an action  “Talking T-shirts” as part of the Project “Territory of Tolerance” which is implemented with the support of the US Embassy. But they decided also to gather funds as part of the Action “Light acts for the Light Day” as the foreign students were very eager to help the sick children of the region.

The head of the public organization of Muslim young people “Friendship,” a 5th year student of the Medical Institute of the Sumy State University, Bassam comes from Syria. He stated that the idea that Arabs are terrorists dominates in the society but it is not so in reality, especially, in Sumy. On the contrary, foreign students take an active part in the life of the city, including volunteer activities.
