The next annual meeting of the Eastern Rite Catholic Bishops of Europe will be held in a year in Lviv and will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) emerging from the underground in what was then the Soviet Union.
The decision was made during this year's meeting, which took place October 17-20 in the Slovak city of Kosice, at the invitation of the local Greek Catholic Eparch Milan Khautur. The theme of the meeting was “Evangelization of Culture – Inculturation of the Gospel.”
According to Vatican Radio, the final message of the Eastern Rite Bishops reads that the church, “although it is not identified with any culture, it is, however, aware of the importance of dialogue with cultures present in Europe. The annunciation of Christ outside of history is unthinkable. Moreover, the meeting of Christ with history generates culture – the culture of life.”
The above-mentioned theme, as well as the place of the meeting, were influenced by the fact that Kosice was declared Cultural Capital of Europe for 2013. In the context of the Year of Faith and remembering the 1,150th anniversary of the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Slavic territory, thirty Eastern rite bishops discussed how the Gospel becomes culture today.
