Odessa plans to create a new museum in memory of the Holocaust victims
This is reported by the official website of the city of Odessa.
It has an important historical and cultural significance, as on its territory there is a memorial complex in memory of the victims of the Holocaust (created by Zurab Tsereteli), a monument in memory of the "road of death", as well as the alley of the Righteous of the world.
The square is planned to be improved, and a museum of memory of the victims of the Holocaust will be created on its territory, and the Holocaust Museum will be moved here from Mala Arnautskay Street.
The Municipal Enterprise "City Capital Construction" has been appointed as the customer for the design and reconstruction of a non-residential building for the creation of a museum of memory of the victims of the Holocaust at 1/1 Prokhorovsky Park Square and the improvement of Prokhorovsky Park Square.
The corresponding draft decision was adopted at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Odessa City Council on March 25, 2021.
"Odessa continues to demonstrate its attitude to history, including its tragic pages. We need to perpetuate them so that such tragedies do not happen again in the future, so the creation of a museum in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in Prokhorovsky Park Square is important and necessary. Negotiations on this issue have been going on for a long time. There were proposals from public organizations to finance these works. So far, we do not have a guaranteed source of funding. If there are extra-budgetary funds, it will be very good, and we will be grateful. If it is not the case, we will be searching for the funds, including in the city budget. The road will be mastered by walking, so the main thing is to start walking. We have come to the conclusion that we will determine the design customer, build it, and then all the life activities of the museum will be conducted by public organizations. There is a functioning Holocaust Museum in the city, but we will move it to a new building in Prokhorovsky square. It should be a museum with modern technologies and interactive capabilities," Gennady Trukhanov commented on the draft decision.
