Viktor Yanukovych supported the Moscow Patriarchate, because his confessor was Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church. Leonid Kravchuk was reported as saying this in an interview on 112 TV-channel.

“Yanukovych said that his confessor is Patriarch Kirill. He said it officially,” stressed the first President of Ukraine.

Leonid Kravchuk said that he had talked with Yanukovych on this issue and the latter had personally told him about the spiritual guidance of the Primate of the Russian Church.

“And what does the father confessor mean? It is clear what it is. Therefore, he acted adequately. He acted as his reason urged him to,” Kravchuk noted.
