The Security Service of Ukraine reported that they had collected evidence against the rector of the Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhgorod, who has been accused of inciting religious hatred. In December, the priest repeatedly insulted the religious feelings of Ukrainians who wanted to celebrate Christmas on December 25, which led to his involvement in the case. SBU officers documented more than seven instances in which the priest humiliated the religious feelings of citizens of other faiths and attempted to create hostile sentiments towards them.
The Security Service of Ukraine initiated a forensic linguistic examination that confirmed the rector's involvement in criminal actions. The examination provided evidence for the defendant's suspicion under Part 1 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which refers to the violation of equal rights of citizens based on their race, national, and regional affiliation, religious beliefs, and other grounds.
The authorities are currently deliberating on the appropriate preventive measures to take against the accused. Meanwhile, a thorough investigation is ongoing to uncover all the details of the crime.
The Security Service of Ukraine emphasizes that it maintains impartiality towards all religious denominations and upholds the right of every individual to freedom of belief and religion, in accordance with the Ukrainian Constitution.
The Security Service of the Transcarpathian region, in collaboration with the National Police under the procedural leadership of the regional prosecutor's office, took measures to uncover the offense.
Recently the archpriest of the UOC-MP, Dimitry Sydor, stated that the persecution of the Moscow Patriarchate in Ukraine would end with the collapse of the state, as happened with the USSR due to the anti-religious campaign.
Last year he threatened that if the UOC-MP is banned or joins the OCU, its cathedral will pass to the Serbian Patriarchate. And even before that, he was convicted of separatism.
