On January 21, 2019, Pope Francis received Claudio Gugerotti, the titular Archbishop of Ravello, Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine, at a private audience.

During the meeting, the Pope assured the Nuncio that he was following daily developments in Ukraine, towards which he has special sentiments.

As the Apostolic Nunciature reports, the Pope “focused on the delicate state of internal relations in Orthodoxy, on the contribution that the Catholic Churches in Ukraine make for the good of the country, in the political and social climate; especially the need to make every effort in order to strengthen peace through dialogue, for the sake of citizens' well-being and better conditions for everyone, as well as for the full exercise of religious freedom. The Holy Father assured of His incessant prayer for Ukraine and bestowed his Apostolic Blessing onto her people.”
