Poroshenko plans to visit Phanar together with newly-elected Primate

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko expects that the Unification Council, which will adopt the Charter and elect the Primate of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, will be held this month.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko expects that the Unification Council, which will adopt the Charter and elect the Primate of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, will be held this month.

“It is highly probable that the Council will be held in December,” the head of state said on Monday, December 3, at the TV channel ICTV, according to ZN.UA.

The president expressed hope that the members of the Council would have enough “wisdom, intelligence and unity", and also promised not to interfere in the process of electing the Primate.

In addition, Poroshenko announced his plans to visit Istanbul alongside the newly elected Primate of the Local Church after the Council and to meet with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

“The Primate will go to Phanar jointly with the President. There will be a solemn worship, and this worship will be celebrated by the two Primates - his All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew and the newly elected Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” the Head of State said.
