According to press secretary of the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), the church, will support no political party at the coming elections, but it may pay attention to good works of a particular politician.

The U krainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) will support no political party at the coming elections, but it may pay attention to good works of a particular politician. This promise was voiced by the press secretary of the head of the church, protopriest Heorhii Kovalenko in an interview to the newspaper Day.

“The church does not support any political force. However, the church can pay attention to good works of some people, particularly of politicians. But I would not advise ministers to express their political position publicly. For when we wear our frock and talk about our political preferences, it is taken for the position of the church,” said Fr. Kovalenko.

According to the protopriest, our society is extremely politicized and Ukrainians can see politics everywhere, in particular, in the addresses of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow during his visits to Ukraine. Fr. Heorhii can see nothing seditious in the addresses. “Sometimes we can hear what we want to hear. Patriarch Kirill is a citizen of Russia. He lives in a certain information space and, probably, holds some political position. But when he comes here and talks, millions can hear him thanks to the mass media. And if you listen to him through the prism of the Gospel, he does not say anything that could offend anyone in Ukraine,” said the protopriest.

In answer to the question why more attention is paid to the patriarch of the Russian Church than to Metropolitan Volodymyr, Fr. Heorhii responded that the opinion of a visitor has become more interesting for our mass media than that of the host.
