At the celebration of the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew said that any opposition to the issue of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is not canonical.

This was reported on February 9 by Liga.net citing Orthodoxtimes.

“However, some persons intend to harm the newly formed Orthodox Church of Ukraine in order to create a secular institution that, on the one hand, will act in opposition to Church principles and traditions, and on the other – will serve foreign interests in clear contradiction to the Orthodox ecclesiology and the synodic character of the Orthodox Church,” the Patriarch said.

Patriarch Bartholomew stressed that the decision to grant autocephaly to the Ecumenical Council "highlighted the canonical responsibility of the Ecumenical Throne” and modernized the canonical decisions taken at Ecumenical Councils.

“Recognition of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine from other Orthodox Churches is the main prerequisite for achieving unity with the Orthodox world,” Patriarch Bartholomew concluded.
