The remains of the 12th century fortification walls have been discovered in the Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Reserve. This was stated during a briefing by scholar Serhiy Taranenko, UNN reports. According to him, this summer archaeologists discovered the remains of a brick fortification building dating back to the Kyivan Rus.

“The remains of the structures of the Old Rus times -- with varying preservation rates -- were discovered, namely foundations, half-destroyed fragments of the wall and a foundation basement,” Taranenko said.

In addition, during the excavation almost one thousand fragments of ancient brick-plinth were found.

The scholar added that this brick wall of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery was known thanks to the message of Abbot Vasily (1182-1197), who arranged a stone fence around the Lavra.

According to him, the remnants of these fortifications were first discovered in 1951 during archaeological excavations.

Tamara Mazur, the representative of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, told UNN that today archaeological work in the reserve is carried out at their own expense, at the expense of the relevant funds, but the government can still get involved in solving this issue.

“Funds for archeology are not provided for in the budget - this has been always the case historically, but the budget always provides for the financing of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Archeology being its integral part ... Today's research is carried out through the efforts of the reserve and to date (for funding by the State to continue the work of archaeologists - ed. ) it is necessary that the Reserve determines the museification method: what exactly is to be done in order to be able to calculate the cost of the project and to provide budget financing,” Mazur summed up.
