This year the Ukrainian-Canadian community celebrates the 125th anniversary of the arrival of the first Ukrainian settlers to Canada. In 1891 the first Ukrainians set their feet on the Canadian land. Between 1891 and the World War I about 170,000 Ukrainian came to Canada. Now more than 1.3 million Canadians have some Ukrainian roots.
Ukrainians of Canada created a large number (over a thousand)) of organizations: dance groups, Ukrainian choirs, amateur theater, financial institutions, sports clubs, etc. The main places of the Canadian-Ukrainian life are Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Regina, and Saskatoon.
From the beginning churches and religious communities became the centers of the Ukrainian life in Canada. Already in their first settlements the Ukrainian built traditional church. The oldest Ukrainian church in Canada is the Orthodox Church of St. Michael in Manitoba. Its construction began in 1896 and was completed in 1899.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first Ukrainian settlers various events in different provinces of Canada and in Ukraine to be held. RISU team would like to join and to gather and publish a variety of materials on the history and the present of Ukrainian churches and religious communities in Canada and other interesting Ukrainian projects.
