Russian Metropolitan Says Patriarch Alexis II Will Visit Ukraine

18.12.2002, 17:12
Metropolitan Kiril of Smolensk and Kaliningrad of the Russian Orthodox Church, head of the External Church Relations Department for the Moscow Patriarchate, said on 17 December 2002 that the visit of Patriarch Alexis II to Ukraine “is still on the agenda.”

This announcement was made at a press conference in Moscow, held after the 7th International Russian People’s Assembly. Metropolitan Kiril noted that Patriarch Alexis has accepted the invitation of the Ukrainian Parliament to visit Ukraine, but “because of his illness, some time will be needed to make the visit possible.” On 28 November 2002, Patriarch Alexis was discharged from the hospital where he underwent treatment for blood pressure problems.
