'Russian society and Church face steep decline,' says Metropolitan Borys Gudziak

Politics, leadership, society, and the Church in Russia are declining.

Metropolitan Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia shared his views in an interview with Espreso.

He stated, "I don't believe that Russia is in a winning situation. In fact, I would describe it as a tragic state; the politics, leadership, society, and the Church in Russia are all in steep decline. The ability to kill or seize land does not equate to victory. Sooner or later, the consequences will resurface, much like how Germans will likely feel shame about their Nazi heritage for generations to come. Eventually, Russians will be compelled to repent because war embodies evil. This particular conflict is a manifestation of every conceivable evil: it involves lying, theft, rape, and violence — everything that harms children, the economy, the earth, and ultimately, goes against God and humanity."

Metropolitan Gudziak emphasized that employing bad methods will not lead to a positive outcome.

He added, "Though it's impossible to predict how this situation will unfold, I suspect that, similar to soldiers in Western societies, many soldiers in Russia may not be willing to die for their country. I believe that many of them are driven to war by material necessity rather than a genuine moral choice. There is significant manipulation involved in this process."
