About 10-12% of couples in Ukraine live in civil marriages, an employee of the Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Liudmyla Sliusar, said at a press conference in Kyiv on June 14, referring to the results of a sociological poll conducted by the institute.

According to the poll, the number of marriages is high in Ukraine.

Only 3% of people aged between 35 and 49 have not experienced married life and are not married.

In addition, some 10% of young people aged between 20 and 29 are not planning to get married, but instead, they are planning to focus on their career and private life.

Sliusar added that in most cases the reasons for getting married are "rather romantic," for example, love and a wish to have a loved one by his or her side.

The number of early marriages has significantly dropped in Ukraine.

In 2009 only 3% of marriages, in which brides were younger than 18 years old, were registered. This trend is more typical for rural areas.

According to the poll, 50% of young people are planning to register their marriage at once, while 45% of respondents want to check their relationship first, and only 5% want to live their life without official marriage.
