For more than a year, the National Guardsmen who defended the Chornobyl nuclear power plant have been held captive by Russia. Since the beginning of a full-scale war, the fate of the defenders remains unknown. The head of the UGCC asks the faithful to pray for their release.
This was reported by the Information Department of the UGCC.
At the end of March 2022, the invaders left the Chornobyl nuclear power plant and took with them 167 captured Ukrainian soldiers who were guarding it. A year has passed since then — more than 9,408 hours of hell, unbearable bullying and exhaustion in the dungeons of Russian dungeons. More than a year of uncertainty for their families.
One of the slogans of the Chornobyl tragedy is "Never Again!” The National Guardsmen from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, at the cost of their own lives, health and freedom, did not allow a repeat of the Chornobyl tragedy of 1986. The head of the UGCC calls on everyone to remember them and pray for the release of prisoners of war.
It is worth noting that the Church is making every effort to ensure that all Ukrainian prisoners return to their homeland as soon as possible. In particular, the Patriarch of the UGCC regularly resends lists of prisoners of war to the Pope. According to His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Pope Francis is involved in all possible channels to release Ukrainian prisoners.
At the end of June last year, His Beatitude Sviatoslav met with relatives of captured national guardsmen and assured them that in addition to prayer, the Church is constantly looking for ways to find everyone and return them home.
