Information

Skyt Maniavskyi is an ascetic men's monastery of the Eastern Rite (Ukrainian Athos), an outstanding center of spirituality, culture, and art of Ukraine. The monastery was founded by Yov Kniahynytskyi in 1606 near the village of Maniava of Bohorodchany District of Ivano-Franksivk Oblast. From 1621, the monastery was surrounded by a stone wall including three towers, which sheltered the residents of the surrounding villages during the raids of the Turks and Tatars. It was one of the centers of cultural life in Galicia. It had a large library and was famous for its main iconostasis created by a Ukrainian painter, Y. Kondzelevych. Later, the iconostasis was moved to a church in the village of Bohorodchany. Since 1923, the so-called Bohorodchany Iconostasis has been kept in the Ukrainian National Museum in Lviv. In 1785, it was closed by the Austrian government. In 1980, a historic-architectural museum was opened. In 1998, the Maniavskyi Men's Monastery of Exaltation of the Cross was opened.
