Virtual Vertep Vision is a series of articles and videos dedicated to each character of the traditional Ukrainian Vertep. Created as part of the project “BoykoTravel: Vertep PreServes Ukraine”, implemented with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.
The scribes and learned scholars told them
To seek the Messiah in Bethlehem.
(Carol “In Bethlehem Today the Pure Virgin Mary”, 1925)
The Scriber is a Vertep character who stands outside the action – yet is its architect. He is neither shepherd nor soldier nor angel, but he alone deciphers the ancient prophecies and names Bethlehem as the birthplace of the Messiah. His role is knowledge without action, word without movement.
He appears as a living encyclopedia: he knows the Law, quotes the prophets, understands where the Savior must appear. It is he whom King Herod summons to learn where the One who threatens his power is to be born. He holds the key to truth – yet his heart remains closed. He is the symbol of knowledge that never becomes faith, of intellect without response.
His speech is cold, dry, precise – a source of information, but not of belief. There is no emotion in him, only logic – logic that leads to tragedy.
His attire emphasizes his authority, intellectual detachment, and distance from ordinary people: a long linen or wool tunic reaching the ankles, covered by a draped mantle or cloak. The edges of the garment are adorned with tassels or a blue thread (according to the tzitzit commandment), and his head is covered with a shawl. In his hands – a scroll or manuscript of the prophets: a symbol of the Law and knowledge that has not come alive.
The Scriber is a warning: one may know all truth – and still never encounter God.
