UGCC Bishop Vasyl Medvit passed away

On Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 20:00 local time, at the age of 76, after a long illness, Emeritus Bishop Vasyl Medvit reposed in the Lord. The bishop passed away in the monastery of the Basilian Fathers in Warsaw.

This was reported by the Information Department of the UGCC.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav celebrated a memorial service for the repose of the bishop in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Basilian Fathers Monastery in Warsaw.

“It is a strange providence of God that I am here today...,” said the Head of the UGCC.

Together with the Head of the Church, Fr. Petro Kushka, OSBM, and Fr. Ambrose Kozak, OSBM, prayed for the repose of their fellow clergyman.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav calls on all the faithful and clergy of the UGCC to pray for the repose of the soul of the departed servant of God, Bishop Vasyl.

In the morning of the same day, the Head of the Church visited the seriously ill Bishop Vasyl. He talked to him and assured him of spiritual support.

From 1994 to 2013, Bishop Vasyl Medvit, OSBM, performed an active episcopal ministry, particularly in Ukraine. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Lviv Archeparchy alongside His Beatitude Myroslav Lubachivsky, was an apostolic visitor for the faithful of the UGCC in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, and was the exarch of the Kyiv-Vyshhorod Exarchate with its seat in Kyiv. For two years, he and Protodeacon Mykhailo Prodyus visited almost all Greek Catholic communities and parishes of this exarchate. In addition, Bishop Vasyl served as Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC and served as Bishop of the Curia of the Supreme Archbishop alongside His Beatitude Liubomyr Huzar. He was also an auxiliary bishop of the Donetsk and Kharkiv Exarchate of the UGCC.

This year, Bishop Vasyl celebrated a triple anniversary: 75 years since his birth, 40 years since his ordination as a priest, and 30 years since his ordination as a bishop.
