Next year, the key humanitarian problem in the world will be an increase in the number of starving people. In this context, Ukrainians as a nation can take on a global mission - the fight against hunger on a global level.
This opinion was expressed on the air of the TV channel "Ukraine 24" by the head of the UGCC, Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk.
"The (coronavirus - Ed.) pandemic will have very profound consequences. So far, we have only realized these consequences at the health level, the weakness of our health system, and the different abilities of our state to provide the necessary medical care. But there are other consequences. And perhaps the closest such humanitarian problem will be the problem of meeting the basic needs of people. Today we are talking about the fact that next year may be a dangerous year, when the number of people in the world who will suffer from hunger may grow tenfold," he said.
According to the head of the UGCC, when it comes to combating the threat of hunger, the Ukrainian people in the world have a separate mission.
"We survived the Holodomor, and we know what hunger is. And we must be the voice of those who are starving, as a people, a state, at the international level. The history of the Ukrainian people in the new circumstances gives us a global mission. We must say "No to hunger!" in the third millennium. We have a resource, we have land, we have a chance to join the fight against hunger on a global level," he stressed.
